Tips for a designing a great kid's bedroom...

Get inspired:
The best way to find inspiration is to look at your child's interests, activities and favorite colors. All the things they love. Whether the theme is simple or elaborate, it should come from things that make your child happy and comfortable.

Furniture:
Start with a comfortable and cozy bed. Consider a full or even queen size bed even for little ones, making an ideal space to read bedtime stories and keeping ahead of the growing years ahead. Make the bed the main focus of the room. Then add the other essential pieces like a nightstand, dresser and desk. Then determine whether there is enough room for additional pieces like a bookshelf, armoire, activity table and sitting area.

Make it functional:
Create a bedroom that is as functional as it is beautiful by adding elements that encourage organization, creativity and a serene place for your child to rest. Under bed storage and trundle beds help keep things neat and tidy. Loft style beds with a study desk under the bed are great for small rooms or rooms shared by siblings. And pick themes that will continue to work as your child grows up.

Next comes colors:
Using your child's favorite colors and interests pick out sheets and comforters that reflect their favorites. Next, choose colors from the bedding in different tones and use these as the basis for the whole room's color scheme.

White, the Perfect Neutral:
It's practical, season less and everything looks good against it. Use white in a kid's room by getting the biggest pieces, beds, dressers, desks and tables in a white painted finish. White rests the eyes, while visually anchoring the room for continuity. Best of all, white sets the stage for any other colors you choose and makes redecorating quick and easy.

Other furniture finishes:
Cherry and natural birch finishes tend to have a more traditional look and go well with primary accessory colors like red, blue and green. Play up a nautical theme with cherry and natural birch.

Teens especially love the richness of an espresso or black finish and these colors really anchor a room. Red and white or even red, white and blue look fabulous in this color scheme.

Bringing in color:
Color is charged with energy, and colors for kids can be supercharged. Balance playfulness and serenity by choosing bedding, curtains and rugs in lighter, sun-washed versions of your child's favorite colors. That way, brighter accents will stand out without overwhelming.
For instance if your child loves purple, try a lighter lavender with a couple of accents in deep purple. Compliment purples with it's opposite on the color wheel, a yellow-green.

Add pattern:
More than any other element, pattern creates the personality of a room. In a child's room, the simplest patterns have eternal appeal. Florals, polka dots and stripes never go out of style.
The secret to successful patterning is repetition. Using polka dots or stripes in one color and using it's reverse in it's opposite color creates fun. Pairing stripes and plaids with solids or dots creates an interesting combination as well.

Fun details:
Details give the room even more personality. Choosing from the child's favorite interests and activities, find accessories like wall art and lamps that reflect these ideas. Next add a colorful rug and comfortable chair for friends and reading time.

Organization:
Use baskets, colorful buckets, shelves and wall pegs that compliment your color scheme and help your child learn organizational skills.
